Tip of the Month

Candy wishes
If your child wants to give holiday gifts to friends at school, it can be difficult to decide where to draw the line – do you buy gifts just for close friends? Or for the entire class? Our solution:  personalized chocolate bars. They’re affordable enough to give to everyone at school, and who doesn’t like chocolate? Just purchase chocolate bars wrapped in foil and remove the manufacturer’s paper wrapper. Then print your own labels, wrap them around the chocolate bar and use double-stick tape to close the seam. We used 3.5 ounce Cadbury bars because they’re delicious and just the right size. Since so many kids have nut allergies, we added a warning to all our custom labels to let the recipients know that the chocolate was manufactured in a plant that processes tree nuts. All of our wrappers are printed two per page. We used a rotary trimmer to trim the wrappers down to size after printing

Our PrintingPress design features a trio of red and blue holiday presents surrounded by red and blue snowflakes. We wrote the words “happyHAPPYholidays” in red and blue using the Girls are Weird font from the Easy Invitations Bonus Content CD. We added a signature in red beneath the holiday message and then used our color laser printer to print onto Metallic White paper cut to 8.5 x 10.5 inches. If you don’t have access to a color laser printer, use our gift wrap paper and your ink jet. After printing, cut the sheet in half so that you have two 5.25 x 8.5 inch wrappers, and then trim the edge just below the nut warning.

An adorable penguin floats in a field of blue on our PrintingPress Platinum design. We created three versions:  a penguin wearing a Santa hat, a penguin wearing a yarmulke, and a penguin with a bare head. Once you’ve chosen your penguin, modify the text that we added in white using the Girls are Weird font from the Easy Invitations Bonus Content CD. Since the text is white and you can’t see the text against the blue background, you’ll need to change the text color to black to make your changes. Then change the text color back to white when you’re ready to print. We printed onto gift wrap paper to give it a shiny, professional look. When you trim the wrappers, first cut the page in half so that you have two 5.5 x 8.5 inch pieces of paper. Then trim off 3/16 from each edge to make the sheet 5.125 inches wide, and then trim the top and bottom of the wrapper.

Our PrintingPress Extreme 5.0 designs look like they came right out of Santa’s workshop. We created a label type stationery and made two designs: candy cane stripes on a field of green and white snowflakes on a field of blue. For the candy cane design, we added a custom background to the label and filled it in green. Next we added a 0.20 inch custom border to the label and set the border’s Shape to Double Line (Left/Right). We added a 0.25 inch margin to the border to move it away from the edge of the label and filled the border with a custom pattern of red and white stripes. For tips on creating striped patterns, see the Extreme Tip from the June 2007 issue. Once we created the custom pattern, we selected Choose / Adjust pattern in the Color menu and rotated the pattern 30 degrees to the right. We added the words “Happy Holidays” in white using the Girls are Weird font from the Easy Invitations Bonus Content CD. Then we added an image of green & white candy cane heart on a red circle, and then the signature below. For the snowflake design, we filled our custom border in light blue, set the border Fill Type to Image, and filled the border with little white snowflakes. We added a larger snowflake above the holiday greeting and signature, written in white using the Girls are Weird font. We printed the wrappers onto gift wrap paper to give them a nice sheen. After you print the wrappers, cut 0.25 inches off of each side of the page so that it measures 10.5 x 8.5 inches. Then cut the sheet in half so that you have two 5.25 x 8.5 inch sheets. Then cut of the rest of the white and you’re ready to wrap.

A timely gift
If you’re going to give someone a calendar as a gift, December is the best time so they get to use it for an entire year. We used PrintingPress Extreme 5.0 to create an adorable calendar showcasing seasonal personal photos from the previous year. We designed the calendar to use 5 x 7 cards in a lucite photo frame. It makes a beautiful, inexpensive gift that everyone will love.

We started by adding a custom border to a White A7 card and set the border’s Shape to Line (Top). We filled the border in light blue and set the border’s width to 3.58 inches. Next, we added a photograph, converted it to grayscale, and cropped the photo until it was 5 x 2.77 inches. We added a custom border to the photograph to add white dots above and below the photo. We adjusted the card’s margins to move the text beneath the border and added the month and year in red. Then we added initials for the days of the week, and then the dates in blue separated by tab characters. We used tab stops to specify exactly where each column of numbers would be placed. We used the Arial font with the Small Caps text case and stretched the text horizontally by 30% for all the text. We swapped the blue and red every other month so that the border showing behind the card alternates blue and red, but you can modify the design to use any color scheme you like. Since the design runs to the edge of the card, we used our printer’s borderless printing feature. If you print on both sides of each card, you can fit all 12 months into the frame.

Last-Minute Lovely

The perfect present
If you’re trying to think of alternatives to waiting in line on Black Friday, you’ll love the idea of giving personalized stationery as a gift this holiday season. We’ve created fresh new designs that you can personalize and print in a flash. Print the recipient’s return address on the back flap of the envelope and tie the bundle with a ribbon. We’ve created coordinating gift cards for a professional look that will wow them. To make the gift even more special, add coordinating StationeryStamps!

Our PrintingPress design uses a retro color palette and simple design. We started by adding the name in all caps using the Courier New font at the top of a White A7 card. We used a different color for each letter and then added a strip of dots in the same colors to the bottom of the card. Paired with Avocado envelopes lined in Twilight, it’s a great gift. If you’re feeling extra generous, we created a matching 4-bar folded note card. Tie the bundle with a blue ribbon and attach the coordinating gift card, printed onto a White place card. Since the dots go all the way to the edge of the card, we used our printer’s borderless printing feature to print all of the cards. We told the printer that the place card was a 3.5 x 5 inch card. If you’d like to add coordinating postage, we’ve included a design for Custom Image StationeryStamps.

An adorable duo of hedgehogs is sitting below orange dahlias on a field of blue grass on our PrintingPress Platinum design. We added the hedgehog background image to an Ecru A7 card and then used a floating text box to add the name in brown using the Benjamin Caps font from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings. We expanded the horizontal spacing by 8 points for an airy look. We created a matching 4-bar folded note card as well. Pair the cards with Powder Blue envelopes lined in Mandarin Orange and tie with an orange ribbon. We created a coordinating gift card, which we printed on an Ecru place card. Since the grass runs off the edge of the card, we used our printer’s borderless printing feature to print all of the cards. The finishing touch:  hedgehog (brown, blue & orange) Personalized StationeryStamps.

If you’ve got an entire family on your list, try our PrintingPress Extreme 5.0 design. We created personalized stationery for the whole family, featuring the family name and address at the top of the card. We started by adding a 2 inch custom border to a White A7 card. We set the border’s Shape to Line (Top) and filled the border with a new snowflakes pattern. Next, we used a floating text box to add the family’s name. We used the Noodles font from Fonts & Graphics 3 for the family’s name, and the Times New Roman font in the Small Caps text case for the address. We filled the background of the text box in red and stretched it to fill the width of the card. We added a custom border to the text box with the border’s Shape set to Double Line (Top/Bottom) and centered the text box on the snowflakes. Since the snowflakes bleed to the edge of the card, we used our printer’s borderless printing feature. Pair with Deep Red envelopes lined in Powder Blue for a wonderful gift. Tie with a ribbon and add the coordinating gift card. You can print the gift card onto White full 8.5 x 11 inch sheets and then trim using a rotary trimmer, or you can print onto business cards that are precut to separate after printing. Snowflake band (blue, red & white) Personalized StationeryStamps complete the set.

Special Occasion in a Snap

A new decade
It’s hard to believe, but the year will soon come to an end. If you ever needed an excuse to throw a party, this is it! Our festive New Year’s Eve invitations are perfect for a big bash, or just a few friends.

Our PrintingPress design features the new decade at the top of a White 4.75 x 6.75 inch custom cut card. We used the Arial Black font in red and replaced the zeros with snowflakes in blue circles. We added the invitation text using all lowercase letters in the Arial font in the same blue and red. We used a double-stick tape gun to mount the invitation to a Deep Red A7 card. We lined the Deep Red envelopes in Powder Blue and added Custom Image StationeryStamps.

If you’re feeling groovy, try our PrintingPress Platinum design. We started with a color block background of blue and green and added retro shining stars. We added this image to the background of a White A7 card and adjusted the margins so that the main text area falls only in the green portion of the card. Next, we used a floating text box to add “2010” using the Times New Roman font at 220 points. We set the text color to off white so that it remains opaque even with the text box’s Make White Transparent setting enabled. For tips on this technique, see the Experts Only note in the April 2004 issue. Next, we added the invitation text in white using the Times New Roman font in all lowercase letters and the Alyssa Afternoon font from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings. Since the design fills the card to the edge, we used our printer’s borderless printing feature. We lined the Avocado envelopes in Powder Blue and added retro stars (blue) Personalized StationeryStamps.

If you’re planning a more formal evening, check out our PrintingPress Extreme 5.0 design. We started by filling the background of a White A7 card with a new geometric (kiwi & white) pattern. Next, we added the invitation text using a floating text box. Most of the text is in charcoal grey using the Times New Roman font with the Small Caps text case. We used the Sample Color tool to make the words “TO CELEBRATE” use the same green as the pattern. We wrote the words “New Year’s Eve” using the Isabelle font from Fonts & Graphics 2 with a 0.25 point grey outline. We turned off the text box’s Make white transparent setting so that it remains opaque and added a custom border to the text box. We set the border’s Shape to AccuCut A7 Frame (NC674SJ) – Landscape and added an 8 point white outline and a 2 point grey inner pen. We set the size of the text box to 3 x 5 inches and added a 43 point inset to increase the whitespace surrounding the text. Since the pattern repeats to the edge of the card, we used our printer’s borderless printing feature. We lined the Pewter envelopes in Avocado and added coordinating Custom Image StationeryStamps.
